Description

The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF) is recruiting for the Fairbanks-Delta Area Forester position. The Area Forester is the lead forester and area manager for Interior Alaska state forest lands near Fairbanks and Delta Junction. Through active forest management, this key position supports timber industry jobs and economic opportunities in rural and urban communities across a large swath of Interior Alaska.

The successful applicant will manage a robust timber program, play a major role in a critical and expanding fuels program, and participate in an active fire program. The Area Forester works with the local timber industry to accomplish silvicultural goals, as well as engaging contractors and cooperators to meet hazardous fuels removal goals.

DOF’s mission is to develop, conserve, and enhance Alaska’s forests to provide a sustainable supply of forest resources for Alaskans. The Division fosters a team atmosphere with dynamic work demands. The Area Forester position offers an excellent opportunity to work with a high-functioning team to manage timber sales and silvicultural activities; conduct forest road construction and maintenance; ensure that Forest Practices statutes and regulations are met; and conduct forestry research. In addition to forestry activities, this position serves in support of the Division's wildland fire suppression program.

Full-time employment with the State of Alaska includes competitive benefits such as medical, dental, vision, 11 paid holidays annually, 2 days personal leave accrual monthly, a retirement plan and other optional benefits such as life insurance.  Entry level pay range is $2,887 semi-monthly, with additional generous benefits.  See the Division of Retirement & Benefits page for more information regarding benefits.

Life in Interior Alaska is an outdoor recreation enthusiast’s dream.  Situated between the Alaska and Brooks mountain ranges, abundant public lands offer trails, rivers, wildlife viewing, fishing and hunting opportunities.  Denali National and State Parks, Wrangell-St. Elias and Gates of the Arctic National Parks are all within reach. Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska and is home to the state’s largest university, as well as parks, excellent restaurants, schools, museums, and theaters.

For more information about the position, and to apply for the position, please see the listing for Fairbanks-Delta Area Forester (PCN 10-9503) on Workplace Alaska. The Department opened a 30-day recruitment on June 28, 2022, and plans to fill this position by August 2022.
