Description

The Area Forestry Leader is responsible for the supervision and implementation of the Forestry Division’s integrated programs existing within the designated area and for integration among those programs and all other DNR programs within the designated area. Integrated forestry programs include public forest land management, private forest land management and forest fire management. This position is responsible for directing all aspects of the fire management program and is accountable for fire readiness and fire suppression. Customer and partner groups may include DNR staff, cooperating and consulting foresters, individual citizens, citizen groups, industry leaders, tribal governments, and governmental and educational representatives.

The Area Forestry Leader is key to public safety and requires the incumbent to meet and maintain physical fitness standards. The duties of the position require active fire suppression and prevention duties which require frequent exposure to a high degree of danger or peril and require a high degree of physical conditioning. This position is available for fire suppression, preparedness, and prevention duties year-round.

Salary Information

Starting pay is $73,840 to $85,280 annually ($35.50/hour to $41.00/hour). Pay for current State employees may vary based on the State of WI Compensation Plan, which requires additional DPM approval to offer a pay increase to transfer candidates.

This position includes an excellent benefits package, including health care, vacation, sick leave, and retirement benefits (including supplemental retirement for Protective status).

Job Details

The selected candidate must obtain and maintain Forest Ranger credentials within 18 months of hire.

The selected candidate must meet the requirements for traveling and operating a State vehicle, including the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Wisconsin driver's license.

The selected candidate will be required to pass a background check prior to an offer of employment.

Based on an assessment of the goals and work activities, this position may be eligible for telework. Telework approval is based on individual circumstances and is subject to supervisor approval and DNR telework policies.  Approval is subject to change without notice based on business needs.

All State employees are required to report their COVID vaccination status, whether vaccinated or not, and must provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information within their first two weeks of employment. At this time, those who are unvaccinated are subject to weekly COVID-19 testing protocols.

DNR does not sponsor work visas. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form.

Requirements

Applicants must possess the following required qualifications (which must be reflected in your application materials) to be eligible for this position:

  • Integrated forestry experience in forest land management and forest fire management
  • Program management experience in several of the following activities:

-  Developing program goals and objectives (i.e., annual work plans)

-  Planning daily operations related to staffing and equipment decisions

-  Identifying initiatives or work activities to enhance delivery of customer service and products

-  Monitoring program effectiveness, efficiency and results

-  Ensuring program integration with other natural resources programs

  • Certified by date of hire as Incident Commander Type 4 (ICT4) or Task Force Leader (TFLD) for wildland fire incidents based on NWCG standards
  • Experience managing either prescribed fire or wildland fire incidents

Best-qualified candidates will also possess the following preferred qualifications:

  • In-depth program management experience that includes all of the activities described above.
  • Certified by date of hire as Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3) for wildland fire incidents based on NWCG standards
