Description

The School of Forestry at Northern Arizona University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Indigenous ForestryThis is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment (40% teaching and student-related activities, 50% scholarship and research, and 10% service). We seek an applicant with expertise in Indigenous forestry (Native American, First Nations, or other Indigenous communities), broadly defined, whose interests will support, build, and complement the School of Forestry’s and NAU’s programs in these and related areas. We seek applicants with skill and experience demonstrating they can work in an Indigenous context such as working in tribal communities, on tribal lands, on federal lands and incorporating ancestral Indigenous practices in partnership with Native communities or focusing on issues important to Indigenous peoples. The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses in support of our undergraduate and graduate forestry programs, develop a productive, externally funded research program, advise graduate students (MF, MS, and PhD), and serve the School of Forestry, Northern Arizona University, and the profession. They will prioritize NAU’s efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion while engaging students, faculty, and external stakeholders on challenging issues critical to a just and sustainable society. The School of Forestry provides an equitable, inclusive, and diverse environment where all in the community feel safe, respected, and welcome to participate. We welcome all applicants, including those who have non-traditional career paths, have taken time off, or who have achieved excellence in other aspects of their career.

NAU affirms the importance and critical need for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (DEIJ) in higher education and we seek to hire an individual with a strong track record of engagement with DEIJ in their professional endeavors. We require as part of your application inclusion of a one-page DEIJ statement that addresses your values and/or philosophy, accomplishments, experiences, education, and training with DEIJ. We highly encourage the integration of one or more of the following considerations into your statement and to be as specific and concrete as possible in any examples you provide.

  • Past and future integration of DEIJ aspects and issues into your teaching and research activities, and any impact of that DEIJ inclusion on students, the institution, your discipline, and the larger community.
  • Academic, professional, industry, and/or community service that contributes to building respectful and inclusive organizational climates, advances institutional recruitment of marginalized people, and raises awareness of DEIJ issues.
